I think we’ve all heard that we should enjoy the ride. This can be applied to many things including life. However, this adage is especially true in the process of songwriting.
Songwriting has been enjoyable avocation for me. Of course, there are ultimate goals that I would like to achieve, but it is also a daily pleasure that comes from learning and create something new. Besides, we all have a choice. We can rush through the songwriting process to make millions of dollars, or we can enjoy every step of the way with a better chance to retain what we learn. Taking the process one step at a time allows us to truly appreciate the art of songwriting and it teaches us more important reasons for writing songs in the first place. That is, we can find satisfaction from songwriting, even when the law does not produce income. It is a wonderful form of expression, but there are many examples of great songs that never got the attention they deserved so there are no guarantees. It makes a lot of sense to me that we, as songwriters, should sit back and enjoy the process and build on the elements of songwriting. In the process of learning, you can build a musical insurance for the future.
In my foray into songwriting, I developed a better understanding of the music business environment. I think it is very important to understand the role of publisher, A & R professionals, labels, producers, agents, managers, Song-plug gers and recording engineer. In addition, I continue to learn about the various types of songwriting contracts as well as better understand the various organizations that support songwriters such as ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and the Harry Fox Agency.
I believe success is part inspiration, preparation, perspiration, and opportunity, but it is also somewhat dependent series. We sometimes take our preparations for granted when it is in the context of growing up, but as kids, we are prepared for that our jobs from the day we are born. In fact, true opportunity can not thrive unless we are ready, willing and able to take full advantage of it. For example, executive interview with Fortune 500 companies would provide no real value to the toddler. In addition, some events can be characterized by our state of readiness at the time it occurs. If I had met Paul Simon when I was 10 years old, for example, it would probably fall into the category of inspiration. If I met Paul Simon today, I would like to think it could fall into the category opportunity.
This leads very well in developing relationships element. We should learn the importance of developing relationships along the way. You never know when you might be talking to someone who can help you get your big break, so it makes a lot of sense to treat everyone you meet with respect. It is difficult to see clearly through the haze of uncertainty in these times, but it pays to take into account all aspects of the music business and not develop strong views too soon. Unfortunately, there are a lot of negative views on the recording signals today. But it is the greed and excess are found in all industries are recording signals take a hit as some artists have found success outside influences and control signals. It makes sense to still maintain all options and to consider the opportunities that may be presented without raising ill feelings or preconceived notions. Although the signs are certainly struggling, they still have strong ties in the fields of media, marketing and distribution.
Some folks believe that the new music model is the way to success for all independent, it is simply not true. This problem has not changed over the past 50 years. The problem is to get the media exposure. The Internet is great, but it’s great and still somewhat random in nature. In another way, if everyone knew your name or the name of one of your songs, they would be able to find you. However, if everyone knew your name or the name of one of your songs, you had already achieved your goal. It is necessary for independent artists to discover and then promoted in the media environment. Word of mouth is certainly a viable option, but you must have a product that grabs the attention of a large audience that is not so different than more traditional forms of media exposure when you think about it.
So far, I have concentrated on the surrounding elements, but it is also possible to experience more direct personal success. For example, as self-taught musician, I find myself often looking for new approaches and opportunities for development. I was surprised to find songwriting as an opportunity to improve as a guitarist.
In short, I have learned a lot needs to produce the very same sounds with my guitar I can sometimes hear in my mind. It has proved beneficial over other traditional forms of learning such as guitar lessons, articles, strategies, videos or technology. For me it was a wonderful discovery to find this particular benefit as an added bonus while you continue to learn about songwriting. To learn more about the guitar is just one example of a particular songwriting journey. Obviously, each learning opportunities will be different for each person.
Songwriting has opened doors for me in other areas as well. Before I began my journey into songwriting, I found it very difficult to express myself lyrically and musically. It was like being a barrier between me and the ability to write songs. The law was very fuzzy to me and not particularly well defined at the time. I knew the songs were there, but I did not know how to tap into this creative resource still seems elusive. After reading books and taking some classes, I managed to find some valuable resources and I am now in the process of “find my voice.” In the meantime, I will find new doors to open new areas to explore.
One of the benefits I discovered in the process of learning was to build confidence in my ability to write songs. After writing a few songs, I found it easier to write even more songs. The more I write, the more I write. I now take a little more time to address specific aspects, so I have not been quite as productive, but I know what I am able to achieve.
Perhaps the greatest single benefit that I have discovered is the ability to express myself without fear. Yes, it does get me into trouble from time to time, but it is also important to know when not to express deepest thoughts. For aspiring songwriter, this ability to express themselves is desirable attribute. It is, songwriter will be well enough to express the many thoughts and feelings that we as humans have learned to suppress. However, additional word of caution may be necessary. Similar to our relationships with people, songwriting our success depends on our ability to provide a perspective that many others may be able to connect. Also, as a form of art, we may be the freedom to create views that are difficult to understand, but we are also at risk to find an audience when we fail to appeal to the public. Such laws exist, but many of these songs can be classified as a “lost art”, as it is unlikely that many people will hear songs that do not speak generally of unique sets of circumstances. For pure songwriter, it’s almost impossible to get “artsy” song published or registered.
Of course, singer songwriters have a distinct advantage of playing their own songs, allowing them to jump over obstacles that exist for pure songwriters. That is, artists and producers, set apart from singer-songwriters, are very selective in the songs (written by others) that they are as part of their CD or summary. This brings up yet another potential benefit of the songwriting process. It is good that people feel very strongly about their art could be less likely to adapt to the rather narrow market for songs. This creates the need to develop as a singer songwriter. It makes sense for the singer also find the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. Of course, becoming a singer songwriter can satisfy one condition for this particular group, but it also makes it twice as likely to break. In particular, the artist will now write songs that connect with a significant portion of the listening public and music, as an artist, which is attractive as well. Playing in front of the audience provides feedback that can be very useful for “developing voice” for this group of songwriters.
I have learned the importance of communicating thoughts very efficient. Songwriting gives us generally about 3.5 minutes to transfer a thought or idea. This is the reason why you do not hear songs that explain how to build a space shuttle. It is not possible to express thoughts that are too complex for a limited time, so decisions have to be made. This process involves organizing my thoughts and make the best use of the time available, which requires me to choose my words carefully.
I have learned how to work together with others in a creative environment. Cooperation can be very rewarding for songwriters and it gives the opportunity to learn from others. It also provides the opportunity to lend some strength to the collaborative effort that may have a greater chance to succeed. For example, a great lyricist can sometimes find great composer. Maybe lyricist and composer can also find someone with a voice to help capture the attention of A & R professional. With the availability of cheap recording equipment and the ease with which files are transferred, this can now be done long distance via the Internet.
Finally, as the adage “Journey Of A Thousand Miles Begins with a single step”, it is important to begin the process. I am not an expert in psychology and build momentum, but it seems likely to me that as we commit ourselves to achieve the aim, the burden of the initial decision-making process is usually put behind us. It also seems reasonable to own approval of our desired goal is the key to success. Take the first step requires that we take a project or task that we have chosen. This act alone can provide sufficient motivation to start the process because we have convinced us of possible values for start such a journey.
